Learn More about Counterterrorism Jobs in the Department of Defense at Henley-Putnam University
The US Department of Defense (DOD) is one of the largest federal government employers. When many people think of the DOD, they only think in terms of military servicemembers in uniform serving at the Pentagon or overseas on the battlefield in the Global War on Terrorism. While there are millions of active duty, reserve soldiers, airmen, and sailors (as well as National Guard forces), the Defense Department also employs hundreds of thousands of civilians (over 611,000 full-time civilian employees work for the DOD) that serve in a variety of capacities in the counterterrorism mission, including for the aforementioned service branch intelligence centers and intelligence combat support agencies like the Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA) and National Geospatial Intelligence Agency (NGA).
In addition to civilian career opportunities with the DOD, the Bureau of Labor Statistics estimates that about 168,000 military must be recruited each year to replace those who are retiring or have completed their commitment to serve. The military is not looking for just anyone to volunteer for service, however. In fact, “education requirements will continue to rise as military jobs become more technical and complex…those with a college background will be sought to fill the ranks of enlisted personnel, while virtually all officers will need at least a bachelor’s degree and, in some cases, a graduate degree as well” (Bureau of Labor Statistics).
