Learn More about Salary Information for Counterterrorism Analysts and Counterterrorism Career Professionals

The federal government is one of the largest direct employers of counterterrorism analysts and other types of counterterrorism professionals. The number of counterterrorism employees in the private sector is likely to be substantial as well, but is slightly more difficult to gauge because those with counterterrorism degrees and skills may not work in a department or have a job title in a Fortune 500 company that reads, “Counterterrorism Analyst.”

For example, a Risk Management Analyst, Political Risk Analyst, Energy Risk Analyst, Financial Risk Analyst, Security Manager, Corporate Security Officer, School Resource Officer, and Law Enforcement Officer may be complimentary titles that integrate and rely on many of the same skills of government or military counterterrorism intelligence officers.

Salaries for corporate and private sector counterterrorism-related jobs range from $30K per annum for entry-level security patrol officers to $150K or more for Corporate Security Officers. A Risk Management Analyst can expect a base salary between $48K and $68K (source: Salary.com). Salaries for US Government counterterrorism professionals with advanced degrees (applicants have a master’s degree in -hand) are hired at the GS-9 level ($39K per annum) as compared with those who only possess a bachelor’s degree or the equivalent in education, hired at the GS-7 level ($32K per annum). Entry-level positions in many government agencies, however, are offered up to the GS-11 or even GS-12 pay grade (source: Office of Personnel Management, 2008).

Regardless of which pay grade you are hired into, it is essential that you understand the minimum career qualifications per position as they can differ slightly according to particular needs and requirements. For example, a Counterterrorism Analyst position at the CIA pays between $46K and $90K and requires a minimum of a bachelor’s or master’s degree in a field related to national security (like Intelligence, Counterterrorism, and Protection, for example) as well as foreign language proficiency.
