The U.S. Coast Guard Academy, headquartered in New London, Connecticut is the smallest of the U.S. military academies. Other military colleges include the U.S. Military Academy (U.S. Army) in West Point, New York and the Army War College in Carlisle, Pennsylvania. The Coast Guard Academy is the only institution of higher education in the Department of Homeland Security and offers a variety of coursework related to homeland security and strategic intelligence.
In addition to the Coast Guard Academy, the Coast Guard offers many education options for those that want to advance in their careers or join the service as an officer. For example, select enlisted members can participate in a Pre-Commissioning Program where members are required to complete a bachelor’s degree, attend Officer Candidate School, and then upon successful graduation receive a commission as a Coast Guard officer. According to the Military Times, Coast Guard enlistees that are interested in this program must, in addition to other minimum academic criteria, submit a letter of acceptance from the school they wish to attend and be able to complete the bachelor’s degree in two years.
