Earn a BS/MS Degree from Henley-Putnam University in Intelligence Management and Deepen Your Understanding of the Intelligence Cycle
Analysts create intelligence products for policy and decision makers through a process called the intelligence cycle. One of the key points to understand about the intelligence cycle is that it is not a closed loop; rather, it entails a continuous process of planning and collection (also known as targeting), analysis and assessment, and finally dissemination to end-users referred to as consumers. In this way, intelligence is very much a service-oriented endeavor where its products and efforts are largely driven by the needs of consumers (typically, national-level policymakers but can include principals and decisionmakers across a variety of different organizations, agencies, and departments).
Intelligence analysts receive information from a variety of sources – examples include HUMINT, OSINT, SIGINT, and MASINT – and then evaluate that information for relevance in addition to assessing the reliability of the source. After information has been properly targeted, collected, and processed, it then undergoes intensive scrutiny by intelligence analysts who examine and evaluate the veracity and relevancy of the data against production requirements.
The intelligence cycle is practiced by intelligence professionals across a range of technical and open source collection disciplines throughout the federal government - besides the CIA and NSA - including the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and Executive Branch Departments like Treasury, Energy, State, and Homeland Security. The intelligence cycle is also increasingly incorporated in private sector companies that provide various intelligence services and products to both commercial and government clients.
