This course focuses on that segment of the intelligence community that performs intelligence analysis and produces finished intelligence. Students will learn about the sources of intelligence information. In addition, they will learn how analysts use that information in the analysis process. The course discusses analytic tradecraft, as well as some associated pitfalls. The student will also learn about the types of analytic products. The course will discuss how the analysts produce those products to inform decision makers, operational units, and policy makers. Finally, the course will investigate some current issues of national intelligence concern, such as intelligence reform, information sharing, relationships with law enforcement, a theory of intelligence, and the increase in single-source analysis.
Evaluate analytic elements within the intelligence process, including problem definition, all-source and single-source team assignment, use of methodology, and matching analysis to intelligence consumer requirements.
Explain and assess the basic psychology of intelligence analysis and potential cognitive biases.
Critique the various disciplines of literal (human, communications, and open source) and technical intelligence collection, as well as their products and their contributions to the analytic process.
Assess analytic products and their value to policymakers, and evaluate the analytic process, to include the methodologies used in intelligence analysis, tradecraft principles, and the tools used for acquiring and synthesizing raw intelligence.
Explain and relate current issues of national intelligence concern, including intelligence reform, information sharing, the relationship with law enforcement, a theory of intelligence, and the impact of single-source analysis.
