Strategic security is a multidisciplinary approach to understanding security at the local, national, and global level. Our courses provide an outstanding learning and leadership opportunity with an emphasis on teaching prevention and deterrence or VIGILANCE to those interested in a career in strategic security.   Our focused, yet comprehensive approach allows you to take away relevant job know how in the fields of strategic security and protection, intelligence management and terrorism and counterterrorism.  Bachelor’s and master’s degree students can further specialize in learning detailed tradecraft as offered among dozens of elective courses, while doctorate degree students take an array of courses from each discipline to gain a global perspective of the security field. In addition, many students in the master’s and doctorate programs will have the opportunity to graduate as published authors in their field by conducting original research.

Bachelor's and master's candidates specialize in one of three fields of study:
Terrorism and Counterterrorism Studies

Study of terrorist organizational structures, psychology, tactics, techniques and procedures (TTPs)

  • Learn how to both develop and execute strategies
  • Get into the minds, cultures and habits of terrorists and their organizations

Forestall terrorist actions, disrupt them and mitigate damage terrorists inflict domestically and abroad.

  •  Classes include explosives and arson, weapons of mass destruction, political and religious extremism, forms of terrorism―left-wing, right-wing nationalists and separatists

Intelligence Management
Study of acquiring, managing, and analyzing information

  • Learn the basic concepts and practices of intelligence gathering and analysis
  • Get a balance between theoretical and operational tradecraft

Ascertain motives, intentions, status and plans of potentially hostile persons, organizations or nations

  •  Classes include threat assessments, covert actions, counterintelligence, critical thinking, and background investigations

Strategic Security and Protection Management
Study of management and control of threatening situations and circumstances requiring protection

  • Increase your knowledge of planning and conducting advanced surveillance and counter surveillance operations on potential threats to a client or organization
  •  Learn how to conduct protection operations in a team leadership or management role, appropriate for Corporate America as well as for private concern

Provide safe and secure environments for people, organizations and property

  • Classes include executive and dignitary protection, workplace violence and security, conflict resolution, building security, as well as courses on intelligence and counterterrorism for a well rounded education in the security/protection arena

Strategic Security
Advanced, multidisciplinary study of the global strategic security community, to include terrorism and counterterrorism issues and the management of intelligence and protection operations

  • Learn how to develop strategic security policies, plans, and procedures that will effectively enhance security postures and capabilities
  • Cultivate leadership and managerial skills vital for career advancement
  • Enhance strategic level subject matter expertise on such topics as terrorist threats and the protection of property and persons through prevention and preparedness programs, including chemical/biological/radiological/nuclear (CBRN) threat scenarios

Conduct inter and intra-agency liaisons, distinguish appropriate policy options and lead others in performance of analytical tasks within the strategic security field

  • Classes include advanced leadership and management, advanced strategic security analysis and critique, applied research methodology, strategic security information literacy, and advanced business communication

Certificate students specialize in one of three fields of study:
Protection
In depth study of the protection or corporate security world including the acquisition of the kind of techniques and information necessary to prevent security problems, as opposed to just responding and/or reacting

  • Learn the different complexities associated with advance work
  • Describe what is meant by “assessing the threat” and the critical role it plays in protective operations
  • Conduct investigative research of open source information for completion of an area study analysis
  • Learn weaponless defense tactics

Intelligence
Focus on mastering key aspects of Intelligence Analysis, Intelligence Collection, and Strategic Intelligence operations for those individuals who want to better prepare themselves for a careers and career advancement in the Intelligence field

  • Develop a solid understanding of the intelligence analysis process in order to successfully apply it in various intelligence production projects
  • Apply the analytical tools used most often in counterterrorism analysis
  • Develop an understanding of the impact of leadership factors, principles, and competencies on organizational behavior
  • Learn to analyze propaganda for intelligence content

Counterterrorism
Develop a comprehensive understanding of terrorism as well as learn about the most successful strategies, tactics, and techniques used to combat terrorism

  • Distinguish the different types of terrorist motivations, including left-wing, right-wing, ethno-nationalist, and religious
  • Apply the analytical tools used most often in counterterrorism analysis
  • Assess and explain the threat from specific types of terrorism including state-sponsored, suicide, and CBRN
  • Synthesize a plan of action either locally, statewide or nationally to increase security against a known or perceived terrorist threat
