Untangling Your GI Bill/Military Benefits

Henley-Putnam values its military students, who have dedicated their careers to serving the country. Did you know that many of our military students cover their entire Henley-Putnam tuition by using their military benefits? We realize it is often difficult for prospective military students to determine how the GI Bill applies to funding a Henley-Putnam education. However, we understand the complexities of military benefits and our experts can walk you through the process of accessing them to fund your education.

What is the GI Bill and how can you use it to fund your education?

The original GI Bill was created in 1944 to provide veterans with financial assistance to attend college. The current Montgomery GI Bill helps both active duty service members as well as military veterans by providing a monthly payment which could add up to nearly $40,000 for tuition, books, to earn a degree or certification. The 2008 Post 9-11 GI Bill was recently signed into action and will change the type and amount of benefits individual service members receive, including a provision for Reserve and Guard members active longer than 90 days after September 11th to receive similar benefits.

Henley-Putnam Funding Examples

Numerous students have used their military benefits to fund a part of or all of their Henley-Putnam University education. Below are a few such examples:
  • One Navy veteran is paying 100% of his Master’s degree in Intelligence Management tuition at Henley-Putnam through vocational rehab benefits. He had to go through what is typically a long process of obtaining vocational rehab benefits from the military. In addition to testing and appointments with counselors, he was required by the military to interview a number of individuals within the field he wished to enter. To help him, Henley-Putnam staff put him in contact with a few professors who were able to provide him with the necessary interviews.

“Once I found out that I could use my vocational rehab benefits at Henley-Putnam, I jumped at the chance to earn my Master’s degree there. It was too good of an opportunity not to take advantage of. Even before I was enrolled as a student, the Henley-Putnam instructors helped me with my VA package by allowing me to interview them. The instructors are great and I now can’t get enough of the curriculum and reading.” Luis Blanco
  • One enlisted active duty Army soldier currently deployed to Iraq was able to pay for 100% of his Henley-Putnam Master’s degree tuition with VA benefits.
  • A retired Army veteran is using his VA benefits to pay for 100% of the tuition for his Henley-Putnam Bachelor’s degree program, as well as books and other educational fees.
  • An active duty Naval officer is paying for 100% of his Henley-Putnam Master’s degree tuition through VA benefits.
Bottom line: Your military education benefits (MGIB, Vocational Rehab, and Tuition Assistance) or corporate tuition assistance may cover part or all of your tuition.
