Henley-Putnam University Accreditation

Henley-Putnam University is nationally accredited by the Distance Education and Training Council (DETC). What does this mean for YOU?

What is DETC? The Distance Education and Training Council Accrediting Commission (“DETC”) is the premier accrediting authority of distance learning serving more than 100 accredited institutions worldwide including the U.S. Air Force, U.S. Army, and U.S. Marine Corps distance training institutes. Today, over 3 million students around the globe are served by DETC member institutions.

IS DETC Recognized? Yes. DETC has been recognized by the U.S. Department of Education since 1959 and by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) since 1975 as a credible evaluator of institutional and program quality. This recognition qualified DETC institutions like Henley-Putnam for federal aid, such as military tuition assistance, government tuition reimbursement, Veterans Administration entitlement programs, many state law enforcement agency benefit programs, and corporate training reimbursement benefits.

Is DETC recognized by private corporate employers? Yes. Thousands of companies listed on the DETC website have provided tuition assistance to employees who have been students at DETC institutions. Institutions include major Fortune 500 companies such as defense contractors, technology companies, and financial institutions.

Is DETC equal to regional accreditation? Yes, according, to the U.S. Department of Education. Not only must DETC institutions such as Henley-Putnam meet the same standards as applied by the regional accreditors, but DETC, given its vastly greater experience with distance learning, applies tougher standards for distance learning.

Are credits transferrable? Given the uniqueness of Henley-Putnam’s curricula, very few institutions other than those with programs in intelligence, terrorism and counterterrorism studies, or protection will accept these credits in as much as it is determined by the receiving institution, not the granting institution. Similarly, for example, Henley-Putnam will not accept art history credits towards its master’s degree in terrorism and counterterrorism studies. However, a 2006 survey of DETC graduates showed 70% of those who attempted to transfer credits and degrees were successful. The American Council on Education reviews courses of DETC institutions and makes credit recommendations annually in the “National Guide to Educational Credit for Training Programs.”

Do DETC institutions provide good service? Yes. Students of DETC institutions are very satisfied with their experiences. According to sample surveys in 2007 of graduates of all DETC institutions, 95% reported they achieved their learning goals and 97% reported they would recommend their alma mater to others. According to data from the independent clearinghouse www.onlinedegreereviews.com, 40% of the top five colleges in their ratings database that have consistently received excellent reviews from students are DETC accredited institutions.
