eLearning at Henley-Putnam University

The
Online eClassroom Experience

Is distance learning effective?

Yes.  Most people don’t realize that distance education has been a popular means of getting an education since 1883.  Today distance learning, specifically in the form of eLearning, is becoming the preferred option by both students and employers who are looking for effective training.

Many recent studies have shown that students do just as well in an eLearning environment as they do in traditional classrooms.  Henley-Putnam University is committed to giving you the best tools and practices throughout your education with us.

What is a typical class?

You log in to our eClassroom where you will find your class assignments and materials.  You will proceed through each class as a series of modules that break down the material into manageable pieces.  As you complete assignments, you will upload them to your instructor through the eClassroom, who will post your grade within your course.  You will also be taking many of your quizzes and exams in the eClassroom.

Each class also has its own forums and discussion areas, as well as general library sections where you can conduct research or get help.

How do I interact with my instructor and advisors?

You will be in frequent contact with your instructors, as part of your online class experience.  You can also interact with your instructors and classmates via email, by phone, and online forums.

By email: Instructors and students exchange email addresses at the beginning of each course so you can have ongoing communication with classmates and your instructor.

By phone: You are welcome to exchange phone numbers with your classmates.

Participating in online forums:You can post and respond to discussion threads of your course work or area of study.

In addition, Henley-Putnam Student Services and IT Services will be available to answer questions and to make sure you are making progress.  There are also other resources for you to turn to for everything from administrative questions to mentoring, to polishing your academic skills. Refer to our catalogue or call us for more information.

What kind of support will I get from instructors and advisors?

Students may contact faculty and advisors via email as long as they are registered in Henley-Putnam courses. Once you graduate, you will have access to our mentor and strategic security network.

Scheduling

Do I have to sign on at a specific time or every so often?

Normally you do not, unless you need to “meet” with your instructor or a mentor at a pre-arranged time.  The beauty of distance education is that you can do nearly everything on your own schedule.  However, we recommend you sign on often to make sure you stay current with your assignments.

What time are classes held?

Anytime that’s convenient for you. You can access your class and participate in your eClassroom any time, day or night – as long as you have an internet connection. Students usually need to log in 3 to 5 times per week, but there is no set class schedule so you can attend class anytime.

Do classes have specific start and end dates?
Yes, each Henley-Putnam course has a designated start and end date. Courses run for 10 weeks.  Courses start on the first day of each calendar month.

Effectiveness of eLearning at Henley - Putnam University

How can you teach things like executive protection or counterterrorism skills without a hands-on environment?

The vast majority of the skills needed for a successful intelligence, counterterrorism, or protection agent involve working with information. Our courses bring in practical applications as often as possible, so you may find yourself with an assignment that takes you away from the computer. For example, you may be asked to look up a public record or plan an advance for a hypothetical VIP visit to your community.

Will I have learning resources comparable to a brick-and-mortar school?

Our resources are comparable to a brick-and-mortar school, but they will not be quite the same as the way you learn is a bit different from a physical classroom.

Henley-Putnam has a library of resources that supports undergraduate and graduate research, and we also help students to uncover and use information resources in their locality.  Our most powerful resource is our faculty.  You have the opportunity to learn from seasoned veterans and professionals who are among the best in their fields.

Is effective learning possible without the social interaction of a traditional classroom?

Many people believe that distance learning is a solitary activity.  Nothing could be further from the truth.  Today, with text messaging and other forms of personal electronic communication, more and more “socializing” takes place in cyberspace anyway.

Your elearning experience at Henley-Putnam will give you a chance to socialize and build your personal network.  We are committed to creating a vibrant, active community of learners, teachers, and professionals that will still be an asset to you long after you’ve graduated.

Will my employer accept a degree from an online university?

Yes.  Study after study shows that online degree programs can provide an education comparable to brick-and-mortar institutions.  Besides, with millions of online students, employers are learning that distance learning is simply another way of studying and learning.

Are online classes easier than traditional classes?

Online classes are certainly more convenient, since you work from home and can study on your schedule.  They also take advantage of new educational technology and techniques, but they are not necessarily easier.  Expect to study hard and expend plenty of brain sweat, just as you would in a traditional university.

What special skills do I need to successfully take an online program?

Aside from the usual academic skills, you need to be familiar with using a computer and the Internet.  You need to be able to use email, upload and download files, converse in forums or chat rooms—what you would do with any standard web browser.  You will also need to be able to use a word processing program such as Microsoft Word, and open and read .pdf files.  It’s helpful if you have some familiarity with PowerPoint as well.
